Rules Of English Grammar
The
rules of English grammar
are varied, and many rules have exceptions. This is what makes the English
language so difficult to learn, as it is one of the few languages that
have so many different rules and so many exceptions to those rules.
If you are learning English, you should take the time to learn as many
of the basic, fundamental rules as you can.
The most common
rules of English grammar
include sentence structure, word use, tenses and punctuation. Sentence structure is used to determine if all of the components of a sentence are present. Every sentence requires a subject, or a reference to a subject. This is the first component. The second component is the point of the sentence, or, what happens to the subject. This may also be something that the subject does. The final component is how that 'something' happened to the subject. For example, “Bob jumps.” is an incomplete sentence. You have Bob, your subject, and “jumps”, which is what Bob does. “Jumps”, in this case, is a verb. A verb is an action. However, the question of what Bob jumps over is still unanswered. A complete sentence would read something like, “Bob jumps over the fence.” As you progress with your English skills, you can begin to twist and break these rules. As sentences can be linked together, you can use a phrase such as “Bob jumped.” and link it to another sentence to find out why Bob jumped. This is a common tactic in novels, as it catches the reader's attention and holds it.
Word use, tenses and punctuation are
rules of English grammar
that are more difficult to grasp. As there are many words that mean
the same thing, word choice requires a good vocabulary. Finding the
right words to use is often half the battle when you are learning English.
Tenses and punctuation are easier to learn, as there are correct methods
of using both of these aspects when you write.
The
rules of English grammar ,
when it comes to tenses, are that there are three tenses that should
not be mingled together in one document or sentence. These tenses are
past, present and future tense. Past and present tenses are commonly
used, as they are natural to write. Past tense uses terms commonly use
the suffix -ed. Present tense tends to use no suffixes. Future tense
is difficult to write in, as it uses terms from past and present tense
linked to a word modifier to make it future tense. It is strongly suggested
that those beginning to learn English avoid the future tense.
Punctuation is one of the most common
rules of English grammar .
These rules are what determine when you use commas, periods, semi-colons,
colons and dashes. Punctuation rules are often what determine when you
have a run-on sentence.
If you are in doubt of your English grammar skills, do not be afraid to ask someone for help. While free grammar check programs can point at what is wrong in a sentence, they cannot teach you how to fix it on your own or why it is incorrect.
