Most importantly, these programs will not be able to help you if you do not have a basic grasp of common grammar rules. Many of the programs will only check for simple errors and give you suggestions on how to fix them. This is due to the fact that English is very subjective, with many different ways to write something. With so many different rules and exceptions, it is very difficult to find a program that can remember them all and be able to identify when those rules and exceptions are being used correctly.
